Prof. SUN Qing-Ping
Dept. of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, The Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, Hong Kong, China
Biography
Qingping SUN obtained his PhD in mechanics from Tsinghua University in 1989 and joined the faculty of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in 1995. He is the Professor in the Dept. of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and the Director of the Center of Integrated Microsystems of HKUST. Prof. Sun’s primary research area is the mechanics of materials with phase transitions, with special interests in modelling, experiment and simulation of solid-solid phase transition processes in ceramics, shape memory alloys and biological systems. His research covers a broad spectrum of topics in the inter-disciplinary field between solid mechanics, solid state physics, materials science, biology and medicine.
Prof. SUN is an internationally renowned expert in mechanics of materials and is distinguished for his seminal contributions in the areas of intelligent and biomaterials with solid-solid phase transition, and mechanics of multi-field coupling and multi-scaled processes and modeling. He published over 140 research papers of prestigious journals in the fields of mechanics, mechanical and material engineering, and received many national and international recognitions for his research, including the “Citation Classic Award” from ISI; the “Distinguished Young Scholars Award” from the Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC, 1998); the State Natural Science Award of China (1996); the “Overseas Distinguished Young Scholars Award” from the Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC, 2011). He has delivered over 40 invited Keynote Lectures and 14 Plenary Lectures in international conferences. He also served widely in local, national and international research organizations and professional societies, such as the President of the Hong Kong Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (HKSTAM, 2006-2008), Vice-President of International Chinese Association of Computational Mechanics (ICACM 2016-2019), Chairman of Scientific Committee and Member of Scientific Committee for many conferences. He also serves the editorial boards for 6 international journals such as Int. J. Solid Structures, Achieve of Applied Mechanics, Acta Mecanica Solida Sinica, the Associate Chief Editor of Advances in Mechanics, the editor of 5 books as well as the editor of many conference proceedings.
