Conference Introduction

The past year was an unprecedented one. Having overcome the challenges and uncertainties brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, ShineWing International looks forward to an era of steady growth.

Member firms have continued working with existing Chinese enterprises, promoting our brand and their reputations in the local markets, resulting in reasonable business performance; cross-border referrals increased, collaborations between member firms grew, leading closer workings within the network; the formation and activities of the Brand and Marketing Committee, Membership and Business Collaboration Committee and Quality Control Review Committee have improved the workings of the network. As at 2021, ShineWing International has nearly 10,000 personnel and 82 offices across the globe.

Our new SW brand will be launched at the conference. We have also invited an external speaker to share with us an American perspective on the internationalisation of China’s accounting profession. Considering the different backgrounds and interests of our participating partners, we have organised various selective seminars.

Jim Peterson is an American lawyer. For five decades he has represented and advised the accounting profession and the large firms on litigation and disputes, practice quality, and regulatory issues. He received his law degree from the Yale Law School in 1972. After ten years in the litigation group of a Wall Street law firm, in 1982 he joined Arthur Andersen’s internal legal group as a founding member. He became a partner of Andersen Worldwide in 1985. He was based in Chicago until 1997 when he took an expatriate posting in Paris as Andersen’s senior lawyer in Europe. While based in Europe he advised on the organization and launch of the Forum of Firms, under the auspices of the International Federation of Accountants, and continues to serve as the Forum’s legal counsel. On retiring from Andersen in 2001 he organized his solo law practice. He also returned part-time to his originally intended career in journalism. His financial and accountancy column, “Balance Sheet,” ran in the International Herald Tribune from 2002 until 2007, when he started his own blog. He has written two books on the issues and challenges confronting Big Audit -- the model by which assurance is provided on the financial information of the world’s large companies. He also has taught a graduate-level course in Risk Management and Decision-Making -- in Chicago at the University of Chicago Law School, DePaul University’s Department of Finance, and the College of Law of the University of Illinois -- and in Paris at the law school of the University of Cergy-Pontoise.
