After the 12th Five-Year Plan, the Chinese government proposed support for bio-manufacturing technology, and in the 13th Five-Year Plan, synthetic biotechnology was listed as one of the disruptive technologies leading the industrial transformation. The 14th Five-Year Plan further emphasized the application of synthetic biotechnology. Under the guidance of national macro-strategy, the research and industrial development in synthetic biology have made remarkable progress, ushering in important development opportunities, and has become a key direction for future development in the biological industry.
However, in this fast-growing field, who are highly skilled pioneers? Who will lead the way? Who has already achieved groundbreaking results using synthetic biology technology? How can traditional industry boundaries be reshaped? How will new products emerge and what key bottlenecks will they face? What new models, technologies, and future prospects are there?
In this context, April 12 to 13, 2024， the 2nd Synthetic Biology Industry Conference & Exhibition will once again be launched in Nanjing. Founded on December 18, 1952, the Chinese Society for Microbiology joined the International Union of Microbiological Societies (IUMS) in 1980. It has more than 21,000 members and 23 professional committees as well as 6 working committees, covering all branches and fields of microbiology. The Society always upholds the people’s democratic dictatorship, adopts the motto "unity and cooperation, innovation and dedication", and takes an active role in activities such as academic exchanges, international exchanges, scientific popularization, talent recommendation and decision consultation. It has sponsored 7 academic journals, including Acta Microbiologica Sinica, Acta Virologica, Chinese Journal of Zoonoses, Journal of Biological Engineering, Virologica Sinica, Microbiology China and Journal of Microbiology. It established mLife in collaboration with the Institute of Microbiology, CAS. These scholarly publications have contributed in some way to the advancement of this field's academics.
In response to the demands of national economic construction, scientific research, production, and teaching, the Society has conducted a variety of academic exchanges to energize academic ideas, encourage discipline development, and develop young talents since its inception. It organizes and co-organizes over 30 academic conferences in various formats each year.
The year 2022 marked the 70th anniversary of the Society. To commemorate this milestone, the Society launched a number of initiatives under the theme "the 70th Anniversary, the Persistent Pursuit of the Humble Way into Distance" in order to "keep up with the world's scientific and technological frontier, race into the economic battlefield, deal with the major national needs, and strive for the people's life and health." To serve the agriculture and biomedical sectors, four "Innovation China" Biomedical Industry Technology Service Groups have been established, with the "Innovation China" biomedicine branch supported by demonstration projects. Four expert decision-making and consultation groups have been formed to improve the Society's ability to pool knowledge and wisdom and better assist the Party and the government in making scientific decisions.
The "Innovation China" Biomedical Industry Technology Service Group, led by the Chinese Society for Microbiology and backed by the Biochemical Process Modeling and Control Professional Committee, works with colleges and universities, research institutes, industry-leading enterprises and application bases to address the development and innovation needs of the microbial industry. Their aim is to sustainably develop biomedical innovation research and talents, thereby accelerating the integrated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, the Yangtze River Economic Belt, the Yangtze River Delta, the rise of central China, and the trailblazing development of eastern China. They will remain deeply involved in the fields of biomedicine, microbial medicine, microbial fermentation technology, and microbial amplification technology, offering specialized services integrating biomedical technology, equipment, consultation, information, training, and education to pharmaceutical enterprises, agricultural pharmaceutical enterprises, and food fermentation enterprises. They will collaborate with schools and businesses to accelerate the integration of theory and practice in microbial strain transformation technology, fermentation optimization technology, scale-up technology, and engineering design, delivering an infinite array of practical talents to the industry.
