This event is open to students, faculty, and staff from Tsinghua and Peking Universities with valid univeristy ID.
President Donald Trump’s victory in the 2016 presidential election showed that popular confidence in government had fallen. Changes in automation, thr growth of global supply and the growth of global supply chains had cut the number of jobs for non-college workers, and widened the income gap between college educated workers and lesseducated workers and farmers. This opened the way for an outsider with a reputation as a powerful builder who was strong enough to oppose traditional politicians and help workers.
When former President Trump won again in 2024, he began a campaign of retribution against people who had formerly criticized him, and has seized control over the federal government from Congress and Senate, threatening Republican members of congress and senators who dared to disagree with his policies, and attacking judges who ruled against his authoritarian power plays.
When a new president is elected in 2028, how much restoration of checks and balances, the rule of law, and respect for treaties and alliances is possible? Professor Samuel Popkin has worked in five presidential campaigns as a strategist and pollster. He will discuss the future of American government and what will be required to restore the checks and balances of the democratic system.
