Lecture on Nuclear Stability and China-US Relations

Thursday, November 6 from 7:00 pm to 8:45 pm

Schwarzman College, Tsinghua Univeristy

CFLD Hall, B1 Level

The United States and China are entangled in a nuclear arms race. Starting from a relatively low base, China is expected to quadruple its nuclear arsenal by the early 2030s. Meanwhile, the United States is investing $1 trillion to modernize its nuclear forces and is intensifying efforts on national ballistic missile defenses, which are perceived as destabilizing for strategic stability by the Chinese. The introduction of AI, increased counterforce precision and conventional prompt strike tools further complicates the nuclear competition. The old norms and arms control agreements among nuclear powers established in the Cold war have crumbled, leaving us in a precarious situation. In this critical moment, how can the "adults in the room" reengage and reinvigorate essential nuclear arms control frameworks? What steps can China and the U.S. take to de-escalate the nuclear arms race and enhance strategic stability? Prof. Ru Riqiang, a leading Chinese missile engineer and nuclear strategist will offer his insights into the drivers of Sino-US nuclear competition and discuss potential pathways to a more stable and secure nuclear future.
