Workshop Overview

In this two-day workshop, Carl Anderson and Matt Glover, the authors of the best-selling How to Become a Better Writing Teacher and many other books on teaching writing, will give you the support you need to help your students become truly engaged—and achieve at a high level as writers.  During the day, Carl and Matt will discuss:

  • An overview of the six pillars of engagement and how aligning instruction to them creates the conditions for engagement

  • Strategies for increasing student engagement, including:

    • Removing roadblocks to engagement by teaching your students strategies they need to navigate each step of the writing process and work independently across the writing process

    • Creating mentor-mentee relationships with students

      • By making time for 1:1 writing conferences that give you the opportunity to differentiate writing instruction for your students

      • By sharing your own writing (your “process texts”) that position you as your students’ writing mentor

      • Teaching with highly-engaging mentor texts:

      • Selecting mentor texts that reflect student interests and backgrounds

      • “Immersing” students in mentor texts at the beginning of writing units to get students excited about the units and initiate discussions about the craft techniques and conventions contained in the texts

      • Teaching the craft of writing and conventions with mentor texts in whole and small group lessons, and 1:1 writing conferences

      • Teaching responsively to students’ needs as writers, making your teaching more relevant and interesting to students

      • Helping students find meaningful audiences for their writing so that it feels authentic and purposeful

      • Teaching students about engagement: how to self-monitor for engagement and know what to do when they’re not feeling engaged
