This presentation examines how AI-powered literacy instruction can be thoughtfully integrated into curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment to support a paradigm shift toward Open Curriculum, Open Pedagogy, and Open Assessment in teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. Participants will explore how AI tools can enhance students’ reading comprehension and writing fluency by aligning with curricular goals and fostering deeper engagement with texts. Through Task-based Learning and human–AI collaboration, pedagogy is reimagined to promote learner autonomy and personalized learning. The workshop provides practical strategies, clear implementation guidelines, and authentic student work samples to help educators adopt AI-enhanced instruction in a principled, pedagogically sound way—ultimately preparing learners to thrive in an open, AI-empowered educational future.

Dr. Tseng is the Inaugural Director of the Institute of World Languages and a Distinguished Professor at the University of Virginia (UVA). She is also the founder of the Chinese Language Teachers Association of Virginia (CLTA-VA) and has served on the Board of Directors of the national CLTA as well as a College Board consultant for AP Chinese.
A prolific scholar, Dr. Tseng has published numerous articles and nine books, including her role as lead author of the Authentic Chinese Textbook series (12 volumes published across Books 1–3, with Volume 4 forthcoming). Her contributions to the field have been widely recognized through multiple awards, most recently the Marshall Brannon FLAVA Excellence in Teaching Award.
With more than 260 invited talks and workshops delivered nationally and internationally, Dr. Tseng continues to inspire and empower K–16 educators and leaders in the field.
With nearly 20 years of experience across diverse learning environments, Ms. Qian is a passionate advocate for educational technology and masterfully bridges the rich tradition of Chinese language teaching with the frontier of educational technology. Her curiosity and leadership as a member of the school's AI Committee fuel her mission to harness artificial intelligence for curriculum innovation and professional growth. A recognized voice in the field, she is frequently invited to share her insights and strategies with a global audience of educators.
Dr. Ji Hua is a seasoned education consulting expert and a staunch advocate of the IB holistic education philosophy. She served as an IBDP Chinese language teacher at the International School of Manila for 19 years and authored the "IBDP Chinese B: Authentic Theme-Based Unit Design" Dr. Ji Hua has long been attentive to the cutting-edge developments in learning sciences and actively explores the implications of artificial intelligence for teaching innovation. She is dedicated to integrating evidence-based, effective learning and teaching strategies into classroom practices, with a focus on cultivating students into lifelong learners who excel at learning and are well-equipped to face future challenges with confidence.
