In the previous seminar on April 11th organised by the Task Force on Carbon Pricing in Europe, together with the Chinese International Finance Forum (IFF) and the American Institute for Governance & Sustainable Development (IGSD), we have been perusing the new geopolitical environment, with a focus on its negative impact on the fight against global warming.
Despite this unfavourable background, in all the sectors concerned by carbon emissions many firms are still anxious to comply with their moral obligations vis-à-vis the future of our planet.
This event will explore three domains which are drawing the attention today: renewables, green hydrogen and fossil fuels. After a general presentation on which each of them stands, the floor will be given to firms which are at the forefront of the fight for climate.
An introductory presentation will be made by Philippe Varin, Chair of the International Chamber of Commerce who will present the commitment of firms around the world in the fight for climate.
PART I – IS THE MOMENTUM FOR RENEWABLES IN JEOPARDY?
Last year, we examined the future of renewables in the framework of the report of the IEA “COP28: Tripling Renewable Capacity Pledge”. A year later, it is clear that we are far from the trajectory, even though there exist huge discrepancies between regions. We ask the IEA to make a presentation one year after their COP28 report, and thereafter we give the floor to firms and funds.
1, Introduction – Renewables in the world, where do we stand?
2, Floor given to firms to answer the questions:
-What are they doing to fight climate change?
-What should be the incentives to foster their endeavours?
PART II – STAYING THE COURSE IN THE OIL AND GAS BUSINESS
Despite all the hurdles, some companies still stand out in their decarbonisation policies: we will peruse the case of TotalEnergies in Europe and ExxonMobil in the US.
1, Introduction – On the global picture
2, Floor given to the firms of the sector:
-TotalEnergies’ strategy, with a focus on what incentives could be put in place to accelerate the process
-ExxonMobil’s strategy and the missing incentives to put in place
There are still great hopes in green hydrogen, even though it seems that the momentum is waning. What is going on? Is the current environment detrimental? What should be done to foster green hydrogen which is so important in the energy transition? What role for the price of carbon? These will be the questions raised in this session.
