The Mitigation of Blast Injuries: Current Studies, Future Prospects

Proud William the director of Institute of Shock Physics (ISP), Imperial College London, also is the associate director Institute of Security Science and Technology and the Chair of UK Expert Advisory Group on Energetic Materials, Weapons Science and Technology Centre. Dr. William primary research areas are focused on defining and developing cutting edge research at high-rates of strain and shock loading. In December 2014, Dr. William was founder then 1st Chair of ‘Shock Wave and Extreme Conditions’ group of the Institute of Physics. A focus for researchers in his field, organised international conferences, workshops, placements and net-working events as well as lectures. He developed the PETER (Pressure, Energy, Temperature and Extreme Rates) conference series, annual conference receiving support from the IOP, Los Alamos, CEA (France). (Group Founded Dec 2014).

Li Jingzhen

Newest progress of ultra-high speed imaging applied to detonation physics and Condensed Matter Physics

Prof. Li Jingzhen, supervisor of a Ph.D. student, Vice President of Committee for Optical Testing of COS and Vice President of Committee for High Speed Imaging and Photonics of COS, graduated from Tsinghua University, and from post graduate school, Academia Sinica, and transferred from Xian Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics, Academia Sinica, to Shenzhen University. He has been studying high speed imaging and photonics for a long time. Now, his main research interests involve in some kinds of extremely-high speed imaging with tubeless, rotating mirror cameras, especially, all-optical imaging with atom-time scale. So far he has published more than 200 papers and 10 books about optics, laser and high speed imaging, and won six national awards and twelve provincial awards.

Nicolas  Eches

An overview of the history and technologies of APFSDS ammunition

Nicolas Eches is a former military engineer, graduated from the « Ecole Nationale d’Ingénieurs des Etudes et Techniques d’Armement ». He made all of his career within the same company (whose successive names were : GIAT, Giat Industries and eventually Nexter Munitions) beginning as a development engineer on 105 and 120 mm APFSDS. He was also in charge of the 140 mm Future Tank Main Armament ammunition project.
He then focused his works on a more diverse expertise, dealing with transient dynamics phenomena, with two main topics of interest : launch dynamics (survivability of projectiles and their components, gun and ammunition interactions) and terminal ballistics of kinetic Energy penetrators.
He is currently in charge of the Structural Dynamics Analysis department at Nexter Munitions

Li Baoming is the Principal scientist of China Academy of Ordnance Science . He is the Director of the National Key Laboratory of Transient Physics , the Director of the International Ballistics Society and Chairman of its Publications Committee. His main research interests are on hypervelocity launching, hypervelocity flight, hypervelocity impact, plasma physics, pulsed power system, applied electromagnetic, thermal physics and transient measurement and test.

Adam Wiśniewski is a professor of Military Institute of Armament Technology (MIAT) in Zielonka, Poland. He is a member of scientific committees, Academy of Engineering in Poland and a member of the Association of European Research Establishments in Aeronautics (EREA). His field of expertise and long-term scientific experience include: armours – passive, reactive and passive-reactive for non-armoured objects (cars, helicopters), light fighting (armoured) vehicles (LFV), heavy armoured vehicles (tanks) protected ; ammunition (one-warhead and tandem shaped charges); integrated fuses; material engineering, etc.

Boris E. Fridman is the doctor of national science of Russia. He is the Principal Scientist of D.V. Efremov Scientific Research Institute of Electrophysical Apparatus and a professor of Saint-Petersburg State University of Aerospace Instrumentation. He mainly engaged in development and research of heavy current and large power pulsed systems, development of the I&C for ITER heavy current commutation systems and other field.

Victor  Shim

Response of Fabric-Metal Assemblies to Projectile Impact

Victor Shim is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS). He obtained his Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD degrees respectively from the University of Auckland (New Zealand), NUS, and Cambridge University. His current research interests include dynamic material behaviour, constitutive modelling, deformation of cellular materials and 3-D printed structures, penetration of high-strength fabrics, and impact on protective structures. He established the Impact Mechanics Laboratory at NUS and is an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Impact Engineering. He currently also serves as an Associate Vice-President of NUS.

Frederik Mostert

Challenges In Blast Protection Research

Frederik Mostert is the principal scientist of Defence Peace Safety and Security,CSIR. Current research areas include explosive device mechanisms, blast and protection against the effect of explosive devices. Dr Mostert has participated in a number of major rocket and missile sub-system design programs in the past and has generated over 50 international peer reviewed and conference publications.
Several tributes have been awarded to him during his career, among which are the best paper award in the shaped charge category at the 20th International Symposium on Ballistics, as well as the DPSS directors and research impact awards. He was also guest speaker at the 8th International Conference on Special Topics in Chemical Propulsion and invited speaker at the 49th Annual South African Institute of Physics meeting.

Alexey Yu. Smolin is the doctor of national science of Russia and the Principal Scientist in Laboratory of Computer-Aided Design of Materials and Institute of Strength Physics and Materials Science of Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences. His research interests include 3D multiscale simulation of mechanical properties of porous ceramics and behaviour of composites in friction using MCA methodnumerical simulation in solid mechanics using discrete elements and finite elementsmechanical behavior of advanced materials and coatingsporous ceramics, biomaterials, metal-ceramic compositesphysical chemistry, solid-state synthesis under shock wave loading.

Svatopluk Zeman is a professor of Institute of Energetic Materials, University of Pardubice of Czech Republic.
Dr. Zeman is a Honorary Fellow of the High Energy Materials Society of India (from 2017), item a member of editorial boards of Chinese Journal of Energetic Materials, Chinese Journal of Explosives & Propellants, Journal of Hazardous Materials, Defence Technology, co-founder and vice-chairman of editorial board of the Central European Journal of Energetic Materials, and also a member of International Pyrotechnics Society, American Chemical Society and International Society of Explosives Engineers. The effect of penetrator/target material’s compressibility on hypervelocity penetration

Chen Xiaowei, supervisor of a Ph.D. student, is a professor of Beijing Institute of Technology, China. He is also a researcher of State Key Lab of Explosion Science and Technology. His research interests are penetration and perforation, impact dynamics, material dynamic behavior, warhead design, etc. He has published more than 130 papers published in peer-review journals, 60 invited and keynote presentations/lectures in conferences and universities. As to awards, he is the owner of the National Outstanding Young Scientist Foundation of China and the owner of the Outstanding Scientists of China Academy of Engineering Physics.



Magudeeswaran Govindraj

Issues and Challenges in Joining of Armour Steels

Magudeeswaran Govindraj, Professor in Mechanical Engineering, PSNA College of Engineering & Technology, Tamilnadu, India. He graduated from Annamalai University, India specializing Manufacturing Engineering. He acquainted himself in the field of ‘Metal Joining Technology’ and has carried out his under graduate project in ‘Explosive welding. During his graduate studies he did an extensive project in joining of pressure vessel steels incorporating fracture mechanics concept. He was awarded with a Project Fellowship for 4 years funded by Armamament Research Board - Ministry of Defence- Defence Research Development Organization (DRDO) -Govt. of .India (for Doctoral studies) at the Centre for Materials Joining and Research (CEMAJOR), Department of Manufacturing Engineering, Annamalai University, Tamilnadu, India. He is also qualified ‘International Welding Engineer’ as certified by International Institute of welding and has experience in joining of armour steels. He is currently the editorial board member in Defence Technology and was one of the guest editors in two Special issues on Metal joining and Defence Manufacturing Technology respectively.
