In its Global Economic Prospects released in June 2025, the World Bank projected that global growth this year would fall to its slowest pace since 2008. Earlier in the year, BlackRock also issued a cautionary note in its 2025 Outlook, warning that the world economy is entering an “atypical cycle” marked by heightened uncertainty. It cited the disruptive impact of five structural “super forces": the rise of artificial intelligence, the energy transition, geopolitical fragmentation, an aging population, and financial digitalization-each reshaping the global economy and its long-term trajectory.
Navigating this atypical and uncertainty-laden cycle demands decisive action from the world's most influential enterprises. Corporate giants that once thrived on technological advancement and global economic integration now find themselves at the forefront of geopolitical rifts, trade barriers, and technological competition. Only through dialogue and collaboration can a more stable and prosperous path forward be forged. The 2025 FORTUNE Global 500 Summit will spotlight how global enterprises are responding to turbulence - exploring how businesses can navigate uncertainty and enhance resilience through emerging technologies, innovative models of collaboration, and transformative strategies; and establishing enduring global leadership in an era of profound change. Business leaders will exchange valuable insights and first-hand experiences in identifying trends, embracing change, and reshaping their organizations. This is not only a premier gathering of top-tier business minds, but also a vital opportunity for companies to seize emerging opportunities and enhance their global competitiveness in an increasingly complex world.
Joe Bao has been appointed Executive Vice President, responsible for the Greater China region and member of the Executive Board as of 8 October 2022. Since taking on the role, he has spearheaded digital transformation and business innovation, guiding the region to achieve three industry-leading milestones: cumulative deliveries of over 1.6 million elevators and escalators; a maintenance portfolio exceeding 600,000 units; and three consecutive years of double-digit growth in elevator modernization orders—now a core growth driver for both KONE and the wider industry.
He is a strong advocate of “democratizing green innovation.” Under his leadership, KONE has extended regenerative drive technology—once applied mainly in mid- and high-rise buildings—across its full product line. This breakthrough reduces energy consumption by up to 70% per elevator, positioning KONE as a sustainability leader in urban renewal and among the first in the industry to implement such a strategy.
Joe has also advanced a “full-chain digitalization” strategy, embedding data-driven decision-making and digital ecosystems to accelerate industry transformation. By introducing “Service Transparency” to replace the traditional “master-apprentice” model, Joe has enhanced elevator safety and reliability while enabling the development of smart buildings. In parallel, he champions collaboration and shared success by incubating tech startups and spearheading digital open platforms—creating the industry’s first open and innovative ecosystem to drive industry-wide transformation.
Prior to KONE, Joe was President of Microsoft China, where he also held several senior leadership roles in both the U.S. and China. He became one of the youngest Global Partners in the company’s history and led Microsoft’s strategic shift in China from software to cloud services, while supporting local enterprises and developers to scale globally.
Born in China and raised in the United States, Joe holds a bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems from the University of Texas at Austin.
