Globalization in Flux: How Can Multinationals Adapt?
Joe Bao has been appointed Executive Vice President, responsible for the Greater China region and member of the Executive Board as of 8 October 2022. Since taking on the role, he has spearheaded digital transformation and business innovation, guiding the region to achieve three industry-leading milestones: cumulative deliveries of over 1.6 million elevators and escalators; a maintenance portfolio exceeding 600,000 units; and three consecutive years of double-digit growth in elevator modernization orders—now a core growth driver for both KONE and the wider industry.
He is a strong advocate of “democratizing green innovation.” Under his leadership, KONE has extended regenerative drive technology—once applied mainly in mid- and high-rise buildings—across its full product line. This breakthrough reduces energy consumption by up to 70% per elevator, positioning KONE as a sustainability leader in urban renewal and among the first in the industry to implement such a strategy.
Joe has also advanced a “full-chain digitalization” strategy, embedding data-driven decision-making and digital ecosystems to accelerate industry transformation. By introducing “Service Transparency” to replace the traditional “master-apprentice” model, Joe has enhanced elevator safety and reliability while enabling the development of smart buildings. In parallel, he champions collaboration and shared success by incubating tech startups and spearheading digital open platforms—creating the industry’s first open and innovative ecosystem to drive industry-wide transformation.
